M.O.

You know, some people would be envious of Michelle Obama. I mean, she is First Lady of the U.S. But I really don't envy her at all.  There's a lot of stress and expectations. People expect many things from her. She can't make any mistakes because she represents the President. And when she's outside of the U.S., it's even worse. Because she represents America.
I'm not into politics at all (and that may be a whole 'nother discussion why not) but I am into fashion.  The President and First Lady were in Europe this week, spending some time in England. Out of all things to talk about, the press focuses on Michelle meeting the Queen, her etiquette, and her clothing!

There's one sweater that got a lot of criticism.  (Quoted from Time Magazine:) "Then Thursday morning she was off to the Royal Opera, dressed in a sequined, patchwork cardigan, the kind of goofy outfit that in another context could get a teenage daughter eye rolls from her baffled parents."

I actually like the sweater. I think it's really cool and original. When I first saw it in the pictures, I thought, hey, i'd like to get myself one of those! Only problem:  it costs $800!!
(and notice that it only comes in small and medium... let's say you're a size large, G-d forbid?)

What do you think?

i think that Michelle Obama should try to look more like the First Lady and less like she shops at K-mart or Target.

look at Laura Bush, even Hillary Clinton, Jackie Kennedy...they dressed like First Ladies

EsPes said...

yea but their hubbys (the president) didnt go on jay leno either...
obama is more "with it" than any of the other presidents so maybe the 1st lady needs to dress that part too?

(i cannot believe im actually discussing "politics")

Thank G-d I"m not the only one who likes that sweater!! I thought i was... then again, michelle must have liked it also to wear it!! lol
Also, i wouldn't really consider this politics so much as it is fashion. we can call it "The Fashion of Politics"

FCG:
I don't think she looks like she dresses in Target or K-mart clothing.. usually J.Crew but not cheap stuff. And people have compared her style to Jackie.

I agree with FCG.
She needs to dress like the wife of the President. Come to think of it, we could extend this to her husband who needs to dress and behave like he IS the President.
Whether or not we like the sweater (I personally like certain elements of it, but I think it's a bit "too much") is entirely beside the point.
The point is, "is it befitting of the First Lady". Jackie Kennedy would NEVER have worn that! (Of course JFK wouldn't have chosen a set of DVDs as a gift for the Queen of England either....)
Overall, I like her style.
I would have less issue with the sweater if it buttoned evenly and not crooked :D

this is a totally different time than kennedys time... i dont think we can even compare.

also some ppl LIKE it better that obama is cool and with it

i agree with espes on this... we live in a totally different time than the kennedys. some people may like that obama is so "with it" while others may disagree and think he should act more "president-like." but people will never agree. you just gotta accept that.

the president is a servant of the people, we aren't a kingdom where the president REALLY represents the country.
and FCG laura bush and hillary clinton dress like fancy older women do. michelle and barack are much more with it than any other president.

just because you're young and with-it doesn't mean you can't dress classy.

and i don't want my president to be 'young' and 'with-it' hello he's running my country!

ugh. I don't like it at all. If I would see it on some woman on the street i'd think it was from the macy's sales rack-at best!
sorry.... ;)

I guess you just have no sense of style! jk :-p

I noticed before by the campaigning stuff, they always talked about what Sara Palin and Obama's wife wore.

Interesting sweater, not my style though! I'm sure they can copy that style and make it affordable.

G6: the off buttoning also bothered me

It's funny to see this "with it" conversation. Cause the same can be applied to Jewish stuff. I remember reading a post about a speaker who wanted to dress down, and her husband told her because people look up to her she can't wear her bandanna or whatever else it is when she speaks.

and I agree with FCG and G6

jsb- i agree with u its important to dress as a Jew and a put together one. we represent the name of Hashem and if we just tzniusize our clothing (originally x tznius ideals) we arent keeping tznius. i dont believe u need to dress in black to look put together- but dress as the First Lady - jackie, laura whoever and represent the biggest Nation.
btw - in the pici think she looks put together but i dunno what dress code is for the opera...

Nice mashal! really makes sense... i just heard in drasha today about how Pesach is Chag HaEmunah. First level of emunah is to believe there is a G-d. Second, to believe that He runs the world and did not just create the world and leave. He's not like a watchmaker who wound up the watch and left it to work on its own. Hashem is always doing. Third level is to believe that Hashem chose us as His Am HaNivchar and we are really special. More special than the other nations.
So like you said, we have to behave and dress like we are that Special Nation.

I was just looking at my google reader and I see your missing a post here.

I wonder if it's true, I think both take time to know. But if they meant something specific, then I realize why you took it down.

tembow said...

actually i did put up a post and took it down because after googling the topic, i saw that it might not be so appropriate (if you get what i mean) :)
